Dining rooms with uneven temperatures push guests away when the Las Vegas summer hits its peak. Your rooftop units and split systems carry a heavy load and require specific attention to keep the air flowing.
The Load on Las Vegas Restaurants
Las Vegas summers bring extreme weather conditions that test commercial cooling equipment. The National Weather Service reports that about 78 days a year reach 100 degrees, and about 9 days climb over 110 degrees. The all-time record high hit 120 degrees on July 7, 2024. Your restaurant rooftop units and split systems sit outside in direct sun and monsoon dust while pulling in hot air.
Inside the restaurant, the cooling load is just as intense. The kitchen generates massive amounts of heat from ovens, fryers and grills. The dining room fills with guests, adding body heat to the space. Your heating and air conditioning system has to overcome both the severe outdoor climate and the heavy indoor heat load.
Managing Uneven Temperatures
Hot spots in a dining room are a familiar problem. The air conditioning might keep the bar cold while the tables near the kitchen doors stay uncomfortably warm. Uneven airflow, duct leaks or a rooftop unit that has lost capacity can cause them. If your equipment is struggling to maintain a set temperature, it is time to have a technician check the system.
Airflow balancing and thermostat settings can help even out the room. A programmable thermostat can adjust the cooling before the dinner rush begins. We can evaluate your ductwork and airflow to find out why certain areas stay hot. Our technicians check refrigerant pressures and the blower.
Maintenance for Continuous Operation
Running a restaurant means you rely on continuous cooling to keep your doors open. When a unit fails on a Friday night in July, it directly impacts your service and your revenue. Regular maintenance looks at the parts that work hardest before the busiest weeks. ENERGY STAR suggests checking the cooling in spring and the heating in fall. Our cooling tune-up includes:
- Rinsing the outdoor coil
- Testing the capacitor and contactor
- Checking and tightening electrical connections
- Clearing the condensate drain line
Filters require constant attention in a restaurant environment. Airborne grease, flour and dust clog filters much faster than in a retail store or a home. ENERGY STAR recommends checking the filter every month and changing it at least every three months. In a busy kitchen, change the filter whenever the monthly check shows it is dirty. A clogged filter restricts airflow, forcing the blower motor to work harder and reducing the cooling capacity of the entire system. Keeping clean filters on hand is a simple way to protect your equipment.
Planning for Equipment Replacement
Rooftop units and split systems wear with long run hours, and the maintenance history matters. An older system with repeated breakdowns is worth a look at both repair and replacement. We never recommend replacement on age alone, but age is a factor when major components fail. After a major compressor failure on an older system, we show you the repair and the replacement option with written prices.
Since January 1, 2025, new residential air conditioners and heat pumps are made for lower-impact refrigerants such as R-454B and R-32, and commercial equipment is following the same shift away from R-410A. When we provide an estimate for a replacement, we evaluate the specific needs of your restaurant space, the existing ductwork and the building layout to present options that fit your capacity requirements.
Commercial Heating Considerations
Some winter nights drop to freezing, so heating matters for early morning prep. If you use a gas furnace, carbon monoxide and gas leaks are serious risks. If you smell gas, leave the building right away. From a safe place outside, call 911 and Southwest Gas. Do not touch light switches, thermostats or anything that could spark. The CPSC says fuel-burning heating equipment should be inspected every year.
