Converting a garage or updating a casita requires a dedicated cooling plan. Ductless mini-splits deliver targeted air conditioning without connecting to your main central system.

The Challenge of Cooling New Spaces

Some valley homeowners turn garages into living spaces, home gyms, or workshops. Many also build separate casitas for guests or extended family. These spaces need their own cooling to stay usable in summers over 100°F. Extending your existing central ductwork into a new room is rarely the best approach. Your current system was chosen for the house as it was, not for the added room.

Adding a room to the same central system can leave it struggling to keep up. The airflow to the rest of the house drops, and the equipment runs longer trying to reach the thermostat setting. A garage also typically lacks the thick insulation found in the rest of the house, meaning it absorbs more heat from the afternoon sun. A dedicated cooling setup is necessary to manage the temperature in these separated spaces without overburdening your primary HVAC equipment.

    How Ductless Systems Work

A ductless mini-split operates just like a traditional split central air conditioner, but it does not require ductwork. The system consists of an outdoor compressor and one or more indoor air-handling units. Refrigerant lines and electrical cables connect the outdoor and indoor components through a small hole in the exterior wall. This simple design removes the need for large, restrictive sheet metal ducts in the ceiling or walls.

The indoor unit mounts directly on the wall or ceiling of the room it serves. It draws in warm air from the space, cools it over an evaporator coil, and blows the conditioned air right back out. Because there are no ducts, no cold air is lost to leaks in a hot attic.

    Advantages for Garages and Casitas

Ductless mini-splits offer distinct benefits for isolated rooms. The most significant advantage is independent temperature control. A casita or a garage conversion has a completely different cooling load than the main house. With a mini-split, you control the climate in that specific room with a separate remote or wall thermostat. You can run it only when someone uses the room.

Many ductless models also function as heat pumps, providing both cooling in the summer and heating during the winter. About 10 nights a year fall to freezing. A mini-split heat pump reverses its operation to pull ambient heat from outside and move it indoors. One system can cool in summer and heat in winter, without a separate furnace.

    Sizing and Equipment Placement

Selecting the right equipment size is a critical step in the planning process. An oversized unit cools in short bursts and turns off and on too often. An undersized unit will run constantly and still fail to reach the desired temperature during the peak of July. A technician evaluates the room dimensions, ceiling height, window placement, and wall insulation to determine the correct cooling capacity.

Placement of the indoor unit also affects daily performance. The air handler needs clear space around it to distribute air evenly across the room. It should be mounted high on the wall, away from direct sunlight or heat-generating appliances. The outdoor compressor requires a firm, level surface with adequate clearance for proper airflow.

    Installation and Maintenance

Connecting a ductless system involves working with high-voltage electricity and pressurized refrigerant. The United States Environmental Protection Agency requires Section 608 certification for anyone handling refrigerants. Installation is licensed work by technicians who hold EPA Section 608 certification.

Mini-split maintenance is simple and regular. The indoor unit contains washable filters that trap airborne dust and debris. Cleaning them regularly keeps air moving and helps keep the coil from freezing. The outdoor coil must be rinsed clear of monsoon dust and yard debris. ENERGY STAR recommends checking your cooling equipment in the spring and your heating components in the fall.
