Common Causes
Why Is ThereIce on the Unit
About ten nights a year fall to freezing in Las Vegas. Light frost on a heat pump in cold weather is normal, but a solid block of ice usually points to a defrost problem.
Normal Defrost Cycle
Heat pumps develop a light layer of frost during winter operation. The system runs a defrost cycle to melt it off. Light frost is normal.
Defrost Board Failure
The electronic board controls when the system melts the ice. If the board fails, the frost builds up into a solid block of ice.
Bad Defrost Sensor
A sensor tells the board when the outdoor coil is freezing. If the sensor is faulty, the system never knows it needs to run the defrost cycle.
Low Refrigerant
Low refrigerant makes the outdoor coil run colder than it should, so ice builds faster than the defrost cycle can clear it. This points to a leak.
Bad Outdoor Fan Motor
The fan pulls air through the outdoor coil. If the motor fails and the fan stops spinning, moisture freezes rapidly on the metal fins.
Blocked Outdoor Coil
Dirt, leaves or debris blocking the outdoor coil let ice build up, which restricts airflow and prevents the unit from heating your home properly.
Safe Checks
What to CheckBefore You Call
You can inspect the unit safely to see if it needs professional attention. Try these steps before scheduling a repair.
Watch for a Defrost Cycle
A normal defrost cycle clears light frost on its own, so check the unit again in about an hour to see if the frost melted before calling us.
Turn the System Off
Switch the thermostat to emergency heat if it has that setting, or turn the system off. Running an iced-up unit can damage the compressor.
Check the Air Filter
Look at your indoor air filter. A severely clogged filter restricts indoor airflow, which can disrupt the entire heating process.
Clear Heavy Debris
Ensure nothing is leaning against the outdoor unit. Brush away loose leaves, but never try to chip away the ice itself.
When to Stop and Call a Professional
Never use hot water, hair dryers, hammers or sharp objects to remove the ice. You can puncture the coil and cause a refrigerant leak. If the unit remains a solid block of ice, a technician must safely diagnose the defrost controls and refrigerant levels.

Service Visit
What Our Technician Does
We send a trained technician to find the component preventing the defrost cycle from running.
Find the Cause: We test the defrost control board, check the sensors and measure the refrigerant pressures to find the failure.
Show What Failed: We explain the diagnosis clearly. You see the faulty sensor, the broken fan motor or the failing board.
Written Flat-rate Price: We provide a clear price for the repair before we start work. The price is fixed, with no hourly billing.
Repair and Test: We safely melt the ice, replace the broken components and force the system into a test defrost cycle to ensure it works correctly.
Common Questions
Heat Pump Frost Questions
We hear these questions from homeowners waking up to cold houses and frozen equipment.
Is it normal for my heat pump to steam in winter?
Yes. When the heat pump enters the defrost cycle, it melts the frost on the outdoor coil. The melting frost turns into steam that rises from the top of the unit. This is normal.
Can I pour warm water on the ice?
No. Pouring warm water over the freezing equipment can damage the electronics or fan motor. Never use a sharp tool or a heat gun to melt the ice, as you can easily puncture a pressurized refrigerant coil.
Why is my heat pump blowing cold air inside?
During the defrost cycle, the system temporarily acts like an air conditioner to melt the outdoor ice. Many systems warm that air with backup heat: electric heat strips, or a gas furnace on a dual-fuel system. If the backup heat fails, you feel cool air during defrost.
Does a dirty indoor filter cause outdoor ice?
It can. If the indoor filter is completely clogged, the system cannot absorb heat from your home to send to the outdoor unit during the defrost cycle. Check the filter every month and change it at least every three months.
How long does a defrost cycle take?
A defrost cycle usually lasts a few minutes, and the control ends it when a sensor reads the outdoor coil is clear. If the unit stays a solid block of ice for hours, call us.
