Since January 1, 2025, new residential air conditioners and heat pumps are made for lower-impact refrigerants such as R-454B and R-32. We explain what that means for homes in Las Vegas.
The Shift to New Refrigerants
The heating and cooling industry is undergoing a major transition. For years, the standard refrigerant used in residential air conditioners and heat pumps was R-410A. It was a common chemical that effectively transferred heat in and out of your home. The Environmental Protection Agency is moving new equipment to refrigerants with a lower climate impact. Since January 1, 2025, new residential air conditioners and heat pumps are manufactured to use lower-impact alternatives. The two most common replacements entering the market are R-454B and R-32.
What Are R-454B and R-32?
Both R-454B and R-32 belong to a class of refrigerants designated as A2L. The letter A indicates lower toxicity, and the 2L classification means lower flammability. This classification is new to the residential central air conditioning market in the United States. They have a lower climate impact than R-410A. These new fluids are designed to transfer heat efficiently while meeting strict environmental regulations. Manufacturers have updated the design of their equipment to handle A2L refrigerants safely and effectively.
How This Impacts Your Current System
If you have a functioning air conditioner or heat pump that uses R-410A, you do not need to replace it just because of this rule change. The transition applies to the manufacturing of new equipment. Your existing system will continue to operate normally. According to Carrier and ENERGY STAR, central air conditioners commonly last about 15 to 20 years. If your unit is still well short of that age and working, you can keep using it. The rule covers new equipment, so existing R-410A systems can still be repaired and serviced.
When You Need a Replacement
ENERGY STAR suggests it may be time to consider replacement of an air conditioner or heat pump older than 10 years. When you do eventually replace your cooling equipment, the new unit will use one of the new refrigerants like R-454B or R-32. An R-410A system is not designed or rated for A2L refrigerants, so they cannot simply be swapped. A replacement means new indoor and outdoor equipment made for the new refrigerant.
Proper Training and Certification
Handling any refrigerant requires strict safety protocols and specialized knowledge. The federal government mandates that technicians receive specific training.
- EPA Section 608 certification is required for anyone who maintains, services, or repairs equipment containing refrigerant.
- The certification covers the federal rules for handling refrigerant.
- Proper handling prevents accidental venting of chemicals into the atmosphere.
- Technicians use specialized recovery machines to safely remove and recycle old refrigerant.
When you hire a contractor in Las Vegas, you want to be sure they follow these regulations.
Our technicians repair and maintain both R-410A systems and the newer A2L systems.
Preparing Your Home for Summer
Las Vegas summers run for months with temperatures regularly exceeding 100 degrees. Outdoor units sit in direct sun and monsoon dust, which means regular upkeep is vital regardless of which refrigerant your system uses. We advise homeowners to check their filter every month and change it at least every three months, following ENERGY STAR guidelines. You should also schedule a cooling tune-up in the spring to have the refrigerant pressures and temperatures checked during a maintenance visit.
Kestrel Heating & Air Is Ready
At Kestrel Heating & Air, every technician who handles refrigerant holds EPA Section 608 certification. When it is time for a new air conditioning installation, the estimate is free, in the home and written. It looks at the rooms, insulation, windows and sun exposure, ductwork and how the family uses the house, offering two or three equipment options when more than one fits, and Elena Navarro reviews every estimate. Every new system we install is new equipment made for the current refrigerant and efficiency rules.
