What to Check

Common Reasons YourSystem Stays Off

Before you schedule a service call, look for these common signs to see why your air conditioner might be refusing to start.

  • Thermostat Settings

Check if it is set to cool and the temperature is below the room temperature. Blank screens point to dead batteries or a blown fuse.

  • Tripped Breaker

Check your panel for a tripped AC breaker and reset it only once. If it trips again, it points to an electrical fault a technician needs to find.

  • Clogged Air Filter

A completely blocked filter can cause your system to shut down. July and August monsoon dust storms are a good reason to check it more often.

  • Blocked Outdoor Unit

Ensure no debris or patio furniture is blocking your outdoor unit. A lack of airflow can cause the compressor to overheat and stay off.

  • Loose Indoor Panel

The indoor unit front panel has a safety switch. If it was not pushed closed after a filter change, the system stays off. Ensure the panel is seated.

  • Overflowing Drain

An overflowing condensate drain pan triggers a float switch, which shuts off the AC to prevent water damage to your ceiling or attic.

Safe Self Check

Four Steps toTry First

Try these simple steps to see if your system will reset. Never open access panels or touch internal wiring.

  1. Check the Thermostat

Verify it is set to cool. Lower the temperature setting by a few degrees to see if the system responds. Replace the batteries if the screen is dark.

  2. Inspect the Filter

Pull out your air filter and hold it up to a light. If you cannot see light through it, put in a new one and try starting the system again.

  3. Check the Breaker

Look at your main electrical panel. If the air conditioner breaker has tripped, flip it fully off and then back on. Only do this one time.

  4. Look at the Drain Pan

Check the drain pan under an attic or closet indoor unit. A full pan may trigger a float switch to hold the AC off. Call us to clear the drain line.

When to Stop and Call for Service

If you reset the breaker and it trips again, leave it off. This points to an electrical fault. Do not try to force the system to run. Call us to inspect the wiring and components. If you smell gas at any point, leave the home right away without touching light switches or the thermostat, then call 911 and Southwest Gas from a safe place outside.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are common questions Las Vegas homeowners ask when their air conditioning will not turn on.

Why is my thermostat screen completely blank?

A blank screen usually means the thermostat has lost power. This can be caused by dead batteries, a tripped circuit breaker or a blown fuse on the indoor control board. Try replacing the batteries first.

Should I try resetting the breaker more than once?

No. You should only reset a tripped breaker one time. If it trips again immediately, your system has an electrical fault. Continuing to reset it can damage the system and create a fire risk.

Can a clogged air filter stop the AC from starting?

Yes. A severely clogged filter blocks airflow and can cause the indoor coil to freeze. Many systems have safety switches that shut the unit down to prevent further damage when this happens.

Why is there water around my indoor unit?

The system pulls humidity from the air, which drains away. If that drain line clogs with dust, the pan fills up. A float switch then turns the system off to prevent water damage to your home.

Do I need to replace my whole system if it will not turn on?

Not always. Many times a single failed part like a capacitor or contactor is keeping the system from starting. We will show you what failed and give you options. We never recommend replacement on age alone.
