What to Check

Common Reasons forShort Cycling

Short cycling means your system is starting and stopping far too often. Here is what you can check safely.

  • Clogged Air Filter

A dirty filter cuts airflow, which can freeze the indoor coil or trip a safety switch, so the system shuts off early.

  • Thermostat Location

If your thermostat is near a heat source or in direct sunlight, it will read false temperatures and cycle the system constantly.

  • Dirty Outdoor Coil

When the outdoor coil is packed with monsoon dust, the compressor overheats and shuts off before the house cools down.

  • Refrigerant Leaks

Low refrigerant causes pressure imbalances. The low-pressure safety switch turns the system off, then on again as pressure equalizes.

  • Oversized Equipment

An oversized system reaches the thermostat setting before removing humidity. We look at the whole home on every estimate before recommending a size.

  • Failing Capacitor

A dying run capacitor struggles to keep the compressor going, causing it to stall, overheat and shut down repeatedly.

Safe Self Check

Four Steps toTry First

Try these simple steps to see if you can resolve the rapid cycling before scheduling a repair visit.

  1. Check the Filter

A severely clogged filter is a very common cause. Pull it out and inspect it. If you cannot see light through it, replace it.

  2. Inspect the Thermostat

Make sure the thermostat is set to cool and the fan is on auto. Check if a lamp or appliance is generating heat near the sensor.

  3. Clear the Outdoor Unit

Look at the outdoor unit. Ensure there is at least two feet of clearance around it. Move away any chairs, toys or yard debris.

  4. Check the Vents

Check that all indoor vents are open. Closing too many vents cuts airflow, which can trip a safety switch.

Stop the Cycle to Protect the Compressor

If changing the filter does not stop the short cycling, turn the air conditioner off at the thermostat. Starting up is the hardest work a compressor does. Turning on and off every five minutes wears it out. Call us to find the actual cause. If you smell gas at any point, leave the home right away without touching light switches or the thermostat, then call 911 and Southwest Gas from a safe place outside.

Our Approach

What to Expect on Your Service Call

We diagnose the electrical and airflow systems to stop the rapid cycling.

  • Find the Cause: We test the thermostat, measure refrigerant pressures, and check the capacitors and safety switches to find the failure.

  • Show What Failed: We show you the dirty coil, the weak capacitor or the pressure readings so you understand why it is shutting off.

  • Written Price: We provide a clear, flat-rate price for the necessary repairs before we begin any work on the system.

  • Repair and Test: We fix the problem and run the system through multiple cycles to ensure it runs smoothly and stays on.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Here is what homeowners frequently ask about short cycling air conditioners.

Is short cycling bad for my air conditioner?

Yes. Starting is the hardest work a compressor does. Constant starts wear out the compressor and electrical parts sooner.

How often should my AC cycle on and off?

On a hot Las Vegas afternoon a correctly sized system runs long stretches and on the hottest days may barely stop. If it starts, runs only a few minutes and shuts off, over and over, it is short cycling.

Can a bad thermostat cause short cycling?

Yes. If the thermostat has a failing sensor, weak batteries or is located right next to a sunny window, it will misread the temperature and send constant on and off signals to the unit.

Why does a dirty outdoor coil cause this?

The outdoor coil releases heat from your home into the outside air. If it is packed with dust, the heat cannot escape. The compressor overheats and a thermal limit switch shuts it down.

What if my system is just too big for my house?

A technician can confirm whether the system is oversized. Replacement estimates look at the whole home before recommending a size, and we explain repair and replacement options in writing. We never recommend replacement on age alone.
